healthy snack alternatives

Thank You Chobani for partnering with me for this post! All words & Opinions are my own♥

When you’re trying to cram studying, writing 1500 word essays, work, life, and whatever else in one day… It can be difficult trying to find the time to prepare healthy home-cooked meals. This often leads to mindless gorging on unhealthy, calorie, fat, sodium, and sugar dense snacks. I’ve been there and sometimes, still go there!

Because the best defense is a good offense (or is it the other way around..), I’m going to share with you some healthy snack alternatives, so the next time you get the urge to graze, you and I both will be heavily equipped!

Healthy Snack Alternatives for College Students

Instead of Chips…

chips - healthy snack alternatives

Chips have been the poster child & leading pioneer for the snacking world for ages. With their thin, salty, crispy-crunchiness, it’s really no wonder! When you’re six feet buried in homework, it’s all to easy to subconsciously reach your hand into a bag of chips and munch as you go. Unfortunately, regular potato chips {depending on your flavor of choice} can carry an upward calorie count of 160+ cal. , 10+ grams of fat, 170+ miligrams of sodium, and 15+ grams of carbohydrates… for only 1 oz / 12 chips!  Keeping that in mind, let’s look at some healthier snack alternatives…

Healthy Snack Alternatives:

  • Kale Chips: If you’ve never tried homemade Kale chips, you are seriously missing out! Not only do they provide you with the crispy-crunchiness of regular chips but they are also way better for you! Here is an easy recipe for Kale chips. Alter the seasoning to your preference and dig in, completely guilt free!
  • Popcorn: not the stuff slathered in butter and Yellow #24, I’m talking about the whole kernels you can pick up at your local grocery store, season, and pop yourself! Believe or not, homemade popcorn isn’t actually that bad of a snack!
  • Homemade Veggie Chips: Almost any vegetable that can be sliced, can be turned into a crispy, non-forbidden, treat! Carrots, Zucchini, Beets, and more!
  • Almonds or Pistachios: I am obsessed with roasted Almonds and Pistachios! They are absolutely delicious and perfect for some on-the-go snacking. Another plus, is they also come packed with 6 times the proteins of regular chips!
  • Pickles: why settle for “dill & vinegar flavored potato chips” when you can just have a 0 calorie dill pickle??
  • Sliced Apples: If you’re only in the market to munch, Then try Dehydrating you some slice Apples in the oven or leave them as is for some juicy crunchiness.

Instead of Dips…

dips - healthy snack alternatives

Someone please tell me the point of chips without dip?? Exactly, there is none.

Dip, like it’s chip counterpart, also carry quite a lot of calories in their small, serving amounts. The regular serving size for most dips are two tablespoons. If you take a look at the calorie count of Lays French Onion Dip {a personal ex-favorite of mine}, You’ll see that two tablespoons contain 60 calories, 5 grams of fat, 210 mg of sodium, 2 grams of carbs, and only 1 measly gram of Protein…. we can do better than that!

Healthy Snack Alternatives:

  • Yogurt Dips: Believe it or not, There are a lot of amazing yogurt dips on the market that taste just as good, if not better than regular! Take Chobani’s new Mezé dips for instance. Mezé Dips pack 1/2 the calories per serving than regular dips, an extra boost of protein (which helps you get full faster, and stay full longer), and they come in awesome flavors like Smoked Onion Parmesan, Chili Lime Ranch, Roasted Red Pepper, and Three Pepper Salsa! Mmm… speaking of salsa..
  • Salsa: another great dip alternative is plain Salsa which carries a lot of flavor with only 10 calories per serving! Not to mention, a lot of people believe spicy foods help accelerate your metabolism… this is what we like to call a win/win.
  • Yogurt + Peanut Butter: Craving something sweeter? A 1/2 cup of vanilla yogurt with 2 tablespoons of your favorite peanut butter provides an excellent companion for apple slices or banana chips!
  • Mustards: If you need a little salty, vinegary-ness, than mustard is the way to go, especially if your munching on some pretzels. Regular French Honey Mustard is also an amazing dipping option for homemade chicken tenders, in comparison to Honey Mustard Sauces/Dressings. If you miss that creaminess, simple combine a couple of tablespoons of Greek yogurt and ta-Dow!

Instead of Soft Drinks / Sodas…

It’s no secret that soft drinks are overflowing with sugar and calories, but I know that it’s that sugary-ness and carbonation that makes it so good! On the other hand…. is one small can of Pepsi really worth 150 calories & 41 grams of sugar?? Wait, are you nodding your head?!? 😒😒 No, it’s not! Before you start pouting, here are some alternatives that can help you feel the gap… just give em a chance! Atta girl 😘

Healthy Alternatives:

  • 100% Fruit Juice + Carbonated/Seltzer Water: I have a friend who absolutely swears by this!
  • Sparkling Crystal Light: Whenever my cravings for soft drinks are overwhelming I always grab a Crystal Light. They are only 5 calories per packet, and if you get a lemonade flavor {such as raspberry lemonade, fruit punch lemonade, pomegranate lemonade} the tartness will help you cut the craving for carbonation!
  • Water: You just can’t beat it! No calories, beneficial to every part of your body and health, what’s not to love?!
  • Tea: Need a caffeine boost? Take a step back from the cokes & coffees and indulge in some green tea. Get the caffeine you need, without the calories you don’t need.

Instead of Snack Cakes & Candy…

When it’s getting late and I’m five hours deep into an assignment, I start craving sugary snacks like crazy. However with my goals in mind, I steer clear of the Reese’s, Little Debbie’s, and M&M’s and choose these healthier options instead…

Healthy Snack Alternatives:

  • Lara-bars: Lara-bars are gluten free, grain-free, paleo, bars that come in delicious flavors like chocolate chip cookie dough! Anytime I’m in a hurry and haven’t eaten, or I’m craving a snack cake, I grab one of these babies
  • Graham Crackers: A few graham crackers are a lot better for you than a few cookies!
  • Cereal Bars: your next best bet if you just need the feeling of having a cookie or snack cake
  • Paleo Blondies: craving a brownie or a Blondie? Try out my recipe for Peanut Butter Blondies which are half the calories of regular blondies & brownies with all the flavor!
  • Fresh Fruit: why weigh yourself down with artificial sugars and corn syrups, when you can enjoy naturally sweetened fresh fruit?! If your fruit isn’t sweet enough to your liking, try adding a light sprinkle of Stevia or Truvia. The best options are Strawberries, apricots, orange slices, and blueberries!
  • Dark Chocolate: Unlike milk chocolate, moderate amounts of dark chocolate can actually be good for you! It contains health antioxidants, which makes it far better for you than it’s milky counterpart
  • Peanut Butter + Apples/Bananas: If you love peanut butter & apple jelly sandwiches or Peanut butter & Banana sandwiches, then this is the treat for you! Leave out the irrelevant bread, and enjoy a treat that tastes sinful but is really heavenly!

Instead of Ice Cream …

icecream - healthy snack alternatives

The milk, the cream, the sugar… it’s an intoxicating concoction that makes you feel wholesome and happy in the moment, then lousy with a potential stomach ache later. Don’t fret beautiful, we’ve all been there, but it’s okay because you have other options!

Healthy Snack Alternatives:

  • Fro-yo: Not quite ready to dip into the Healthy World Pool? It’s okay, just dip a toe in by giving Frozen Yogurt a try. Fro-yo isn’t the healthiest thing out there, but it’s definitely better for you than ice cream!
  • Popsicles & Italian Ices: A much more healthier alternative for ice cream, if you’re just looking to cool off, are Popsicles
  • Non-fat Vanilla Yogurt: This is my go-to ice cream alternative! If you saw my  Blondies Recipe, you see where instead of topping my blondies with the traditional ice cream, I topped them with some vanilla yogurt! For about 110 calories a cup & 0 grams of fat, you really can’t go wrong!
  • Frozen Grapes: BEWARE: These are highly addictive! If you need to chill, pop a bunch of grapes in the freezer for a couple of hours or overnight, and you will have instant mini popcicles!

Being healthy while in college doesn’t have to be that hard! It all start with making healthy choices over unhealthy ones.
